PAINT WALLING FOR SCHOOLS

Paint walling is a fun and innovative activity that is available to key stage 1, 2, ,3, 4 and 16-18yr olds. .  Students are encouraged to think up a theme for their mural, collate ideas, design the artwork and finally dedicate a day in which to paint together.

The painting method is based on the time served and well loved 'painting by-numbers' concept which makes this workshop completely accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability!

KeyStages 1 & 2 -

  • Children are encouraged to vote for a theme for their mural. This usually entails a visit from Sensory Murals and during an assembly, the paint walling film will be played and the process explained to the school.

  •  The pupils will be shown 3 visuals and asked to decide democratically which they prefer. This could be a jungle , space rockets and aliens scene or mini-beasts, it's up to you!

  • The children will then be asked to collect visual references from books, computer print outs or their own drawings ready for their future design workshop.

  • During the workshop, pupils create a class mood board. Collating their ideas and discussing them helps prepare them for their final team activity when they are required to paint their own mural.

  • Sensory Murals will draw a line design which takes into account the children's ideas. Once the design has been approved by you, it will be transferred onto the given wall space.

  • With paint brushes, aprons, gloves and paint pots children, teachers, parents and grandparents can come together and create a stunning mural. Each section will be numbered with the corresponding colour, so nothing can go wrong!

  • After everyone has completed the painting. Sensory Murals will tidy up any drip marks and wobbly lines and varnish your artwork for longevity!

Key Stages 3 & 4 -

  • Older children are encouraged to decide their own theme or subject for their mural.

  • Sensory Murals can run a design workshop in which children collate their ideas and create a class mood board.
  • The workshop is concluded by a discussion so that ideas can be enhanced or rejected.
  • Sensory Murals will then design a line drawing to reflect the pupils ideas and once approved, the design will be transferred onto the wall.
  • Generally, the painting will be will be more complicated than ones for younger years, and will require children to to paint with more thought and precision.  They will also have time to think about light and shadow.

16 - 18 yrs -

  • The group will decide their own theme.
  • They will be encouraged to create individual mood boards and sketches of their designs.
  • Sensory Murals will engage with the students by discussing and filtering their ideas into a final design.
  • The group will also be taught how to scale the mural onto a wall from the design reference.
  • Painting day - with the motto..." We will paint this mural together" . Everybody will be supplied with paint and protective clothing to create a fabulous work of art!

'Paint Wallingwas an amazing experience for the whole school. From choosing the theme, to working with Rebecca creating mood boards and then actually painting on the walls the whole creation of the mural was inspiring. The children said 'this is the best thing we've ever done!' 'It's so amazing to think we did that!'. 'I just love it!' It has provided a talking for everyone and the children love showing off their creation to visitors - especially the OFSTED inspector who was also very impressed. The most wonderful day was the actual painting on the walls. Just before the first children put paint on the wall they looked around to the adults as if to say 'really? On the wall?' Once they started painting it was brilliant to watch the awesome picture Becky created come to life with colour. Thank you Becky for thinking up something so fantastic for the children to do and be successful in. I know it is going to be a wonderful feature of our school for many years to come - now we just need to find another wall!

Paint Walling Work Shops and Gardening for the Elderly
Because paint walling is completely non-competitive and has been developed from the well known painting-by-numbers method, it provides an extraordinary activity for the elderly.  People who have limited mobility or are suffering from dementia can still successfully engage in this activity, even if it's just watching their friends and relatives take part.

Just as with children, participants are asked for ideas.  They are encouraged to create  mood boards, this may involve cutting pictures out of magazines or sketching.  Sensory Murals will then draw up a design which is transferred onto board so that the group can paint the mural together on table tops.

From previous experiences, this work shop provides a perfect platform for gaining new friends, combatting shyness and having a nice cup of tea and a slice of home made cake....Yes we provide the cake too!

We can also combine painting with simple gardening activities and together create an art and sensory outdoor area.  For more details visit:  www.wildspacescompany.co.uk

Sensory Murals can even organise intergenerational workshops involving visits from schools to retirement homes.  This creates a whole new and refreshing dynamic to the activity.
